5 Types of Necklace Chains for Wire-Wrapped Pendants

Types of Necklace Chains for Wire-Wrapped Pendants

Hi my dear reader. Let’s learn about what necklace chain types are suitable for your wire-wrapped pendant.

The purpose of choosing the right necklace chain is to support and frame the pendant on your neck.

Factors such as chain types, chain thickness, necklace length, pendant bail size, pendant weight, style and color play a huge part in the selection process.

I have narrowed down some common necklace chain types that is durable enough to meet your next project inspirations.

5 Types of Necklace Chains for Wire-Wrapped Pendants

1. Satellite Chain

You can easily identify a satellite chain with its evenly spaced out dainty metal beads around the chain.

It is typically used as a layering chain and looks most alluring as a thin chain.

So, if you consider this to be your next chain, you can hang a small to medium sized pendant to balance the overall style.

For example, debbytammy used an antiqued copper satellite chain for her medium sized Pear Shaped Labradorite Handmade Wire Wrapped Pendant with a heady wire bail design.

On the other hand, the simple wire bail on JewelryByKaley’s Copper Wire Wrapped Labradorite Pendant matched well with a thin satellite chain as well.

2. Ball Chain

When using a ball chain, the movement of your pendant across the chain will be rough and it might damage your wire bail.

Hence, it is better to use it on a light weight pendant.

For example, Beaditwearitloveit cleverly matched the ball chains with her Sun Crystal Pendants according to the pendant frame colors and shape.

It leaves the pendant looking consistent overall with a well-rounded style (yes, pun intended).

3. Figaro

If you are looking for another dainty necklace chain variety then you can try figaro chain.

You can spot a figaro chain by its pattern of small links and suddenly one elongated link.

Depending on the the chain thickness, figaro chains are suitable for both feminine and masculine styles.

For example, this thin figaro chain frames and elevates the whimsy style of this Filigree Copper Wire Wrapped Carnelian Stone Pendant made by Thefieldmouse on Etsy.

4. Round Snake Chain

The snake chain is comfortable on the skin for its round and smooth texture.

Plus, the chain has an expensive and premium look to elevate your jewelry into luxury pieces.

However, it is not suitable to hold heavy pendants as the bail may damage the smooth surface and make a dent on the necklace.

Here we can compare how the thickness of the snake chain can affect the style of your pendants.

ZDArtisanJewelry uses a silver thin snake chain on her Sentient Rainbow Moonstone Designer Cut pendant to match the cool geographic pendant frame for a sleek and elegant style.

For a more rugged style, you can go for a thicker snake chain as shared by Aleath Nichols. Remember to match the chain and pendant colors for a uniform look.

5. Cable/ Trace Chain

Last but not least, it is the basic but classic cable chain. Cable chain has a link of either round or oval rings.

It is also known as a trace chain for its fine sized chains to suit more minimal necklace style.

For example, this beautiful Rose Quartz Sun Necklace by PearlOwn uses a golden trace chain to match her gold wire frame crystal pendant.

Using a thin fine trace chain is the right choice here so it doesn’t take away the attention from the sun pendant.

This wire wrapped copper multi-flash labradorite pendant made by AbeGoodmanDesigns uses a cable chain to hang the pendant.

This pendant has a bold pendant frame and a thick textured bail, it is better to use a thick cable chain to match its overall design.

If you use a trace chain on a statement pendant, the risk for your chain to break will be high.
