21 Recognized Birthstones by Month List (With Colors and Pictures)

May 15, 2026 by Madelynn

Hello and welcome back my dear reader. In this article, you will learn what are the birthstones for each month. From my findings, there are many different types of birthstone charts available online which can be confusing. For example: modern birthstones, traditional birthstones, zodiac birthstones, alternative birthstones, mystical birthstones, ayurvedic birthstones and more.

The birthstones list evolved over time due to the changing traditions and new demands of the people at that particular time. So in 1912, the Jewelers of America (formerly known then as American National Retail Jewelers Association) produced an official birthstones list to standardize the gemstones used in the country.

Making the 1912 birthstones list as my main reference, I also took the liberty to cross examine and compile data posted from other credible gemstone websites such as Gemological Institute of America Inc., American Gem Society, Brilliant Earth, LLC and International Gem Society, LLC.

1. For January Babies: Deep Red Garnet

Garnet is the modern representation of January birthstone. Its deep red color reflects the meaning of friendship and protection. Garnet can also be found in other colors such as orange and green.

The cool silver frame contrast in the Stainless Steel Mini Garnet Pendant by DesignsBySynthiaEtsy truly highlights the beauty of the deep red garnet centerpiece.

2. For February Babies: Purple Amethyst

February birthstone is the Amethyst, which carries the meaning of calm and emotional balance. The gemstone’s purple appearance can range from soft lavender to deep violet.

This enchanting Amethyst bracelet piece by Lily Catherine brought a sense of royalty with the purple and gold color combination. With the minimalist frame design, it draws my attention to the sparkling purple beads. It reminds me of a golden wreath with purple flowers.

Bloodstone is recognized as the traditional birthstone for March. The gemstone has a dark green base with red flecks. It represents courage and vitality.

5. For April Babies: Colorless or White Diamond

The modern birthstone for April is the Diamond. It is the most durable gemstone, hence it carries the meaning of strength and everlasting love. Diamond is known for its brilliance despite being colorless.

I found this delightful YouTube tutorial by Denise Mathew where you can make your own DIY Faux “Diamond” Ring. Note that she used cubic zirconia, a diamond simulant that is a cost effective alternative to real diamonds.

6. For May Babies: Vivid Green Emerald

Emerald is the modern May birthstone. This vivid green gemstone symbolizes growth and renewal.

I like how JewelryByAnaika wraps the emerald gemstones with the boldness of the woven copper frame that reminds me of a thick vine growth.

7. For June Babies: Creamy White Pearl

June is one of the three months that has multiple birthstones. The first birthstone is the Pearl. Its creamy white appearance represents purity and wisdom.

The third birthstone for June is the traditional Moonstone. This gemstone represents intuition, new beginnings and harmony as shown through its milky sheen that glows in white, blue or peach.
